How does one tell apart male and female Artemia?

Males can be identified by the presence of two mandibles on their head. These are used to grasp the female during copulation.

Can Artemia be kept together in the same tank with fish or other animals?

Because the protein-rich Artemia are used as live food for aquarium fish, their cohabitation would hardly be a successful venture. Therefore, it is not a very good idea to organize play dates with other aquarium pets for your painstakingly raised Artemia.

What is the Artemia’s average duration of copulation?

If the male and female have joined together in an optimal way, copulation can last anywhere from several hours to 7 days.

Do Artemia sleep?

They must maintain constant motion in order to not die from hunger or suffocate. There are brief phases of rest when they swim around slightly slower than usual, but they don’t sleep in the same sense that we do.
