Amsterdam and The Hague

November 16–17, 2001

Residents put stickers on their letterboxes to indicate their spam preferences — yes or no. On the left they’re consenting to or banning advertising flyers, on the right they’re consenting to or banning advertising catalogues.

Typical traffic light.

Typical canal.

Typical street sign.

Tram.

There’s a hook attached to the top of every house. They slip a rope over it to hoist wardrobes up to the right floor. The staircases in these houses are so tiny that only people can squeeze through.

Of course, lots of people come here to smoke pot.

But many more come to see the red-light district. It’s open at night.

And in the daytime.

They’ve also got lots of live sex shows. Couples take turns coming onstage and copulating. The spectators sip beer, smoke, and ponder the meaning of life.

On the whole the city is made to make you to enjoy every second of your time here. And you do.

A parade celebrating Saint Nicholas’ birthday (basically, the equivalent of New Years/Christmas) was making its way down the street. All of the white people were in blackface. There weren’t any actual black people there, not one.

This is what Sinterklaas looked like:
