Bangladesh. II. PeopleMapMay 9–11, 2007 White people are guaranteed to get a lot of attention in Bangladesh. ![]() In the 15 minutes I spent taking photographs of buses at an intersection (see part three) I had discussions about everything from internships in Europe to US foreign policy in the Middle East. Everyone speaks English very well. I was approached by teachers, philosophers, workers — all very friendly. The guards carry out serious checks of all the cars by the hotel — using a mirror to look under the car body. They also enjoy having their picture taken. ![]() Cycle rickshaw driver. ![]() Ferry passenger. ![]() Fruit vendor. ![]() Mother with sick child. ![]() Little girl. ![]() A pleasure boat setting off — all of the villagers have come out to stare. ![]() The first stop is the village on the island. The chairman of the collective farm, who is also the village head, has come out to welcome the craft. A cluster of kiwifruit hangs from the inside of his umbrella; while giving us a tour of his turf he picks the kiwis one by one and eats them. ![]() This man is carrying home an electric battery he’s rented in order to watch TV. He looks a bit like Mikhail Barshechevsky, the prominent Russian lawyer. ![]() The town lunatic, who looks like the Russian-Soviet singer-songwriter Zhanna Aguzarova. She walked through the village, pointing at me and singing, “Oh my, oh my, a madman’s come to visit us”. Little kids threw rocks at her; teenagers boxed their ears as punishment. ![]() It goes without saying that everyone who isn’t terribly busy come to the shore to see us off. This includes the chairman of the collective farm, the village elder, Aguzarova, and young people of all ages. ![]() They carry everything they possibly can atop their heads. ![]() ![]() Little has changed here over the last thousand years. Grain processing techniques certainly haven’t. ![]() Although civilisation is closing in. ![]() A tractor arrived, packed with children and hay from the fields. ![]() They’re expecting him at home, as per usual. ![]() |
