All vehicles have some sort of pointless substance poured on their tyres as they enter Bulgaria. Supposedly for disinfection purposes.

Sveshtari

Map

There’s an important archeological monument here — the tombs of the Thracian kings.

Some of the tombs haven’t been dug up yet.

Some are under excavation.

Some are open to visitors.

For some reason there’s a separate entry fee for each tomb.

The main king’s tomb is impressive.

Razgrad

You can ruminate at length about the border between Europe and Russia, but there are some inimitable signs which instantly make you think: I’m home. The EU flag is unable to overpower the rest of the decor.

Ivanovo

Map

These are the parts of Europe where people still get around by horse and cart.

A long time ago, right here among the cliffs, monks hewed out churches, chapels and monstastic cells. They had enough time to add rupestral paintings to them.

These parts were left unguarded for a long time, which is why some of the frescoes fell into disrepair, whilst visitors scrawled their names all over others.

Rupestral church.

Paintings.

Nonetheless, a number of beautiful caves have been preserved.
