Serpukhov

Map

May 14–15, 2011

An hour’s drive away from Moscow is the city of Serpukhov.

Old in some parts.

More like a village in others.

An incredibly tasteless high-rise faced with green glass has been plopped right into the center of the city.

When, in fact, Serpukhov is meant to look like this.

Charming.

With bits of beauty that haven’t quite fallen off yet.

There are public standpipes on almost every street.

A storm grate of incredible size. Presumably for the torrential Serpukhov downpours.

A rain gutter along the stairs.

Payphones.

Serpukhov’s distinctive signs indicating the distance to nearby gas pipeline access points are painted directly on the wall. White background, blue border.

The city used to have its own distinctive house numbers: conventionally shaped at the top, but pear-shaped instead of circular at the bottom.

18 Voroshilova Street

There was also a time when it wasn’t considered frivolous or prohibitively costly to make metal street signs with embossed letters.

Revolution St.

Doorbells.

Doorbell Maslov V. A. For letters and newspapers

A gate.

The writing on the shoe repair kiosk reminds me of the layout of inscriptions on Zanzibar taxi doors.

Shoe repair for all types of shoes

Cave paintings.

Losers

Augmented reality.

Fisherman Douchecan

Flyers.

Serpukhov, my beloved city. One-bedroom apartment for immediate sale. Home renovations, remodeling, interior decorating. Seeking house or apartment for rent. Furniture at low prices, 2–5 year warranty. Now hiring flyer distributors. Metal doors

Well that’s enough of that, time to head back to Moscow.
