Kaliningrad

Map

August 14–15, 2014

Jet bridges have been installed at the airport, but they aren’t being used.

Nautical lamppost decorations on the highway into the city.

Curiously, the guardrails extend to full car height here (instead of half-height), like in Italy.

The sidewalk barriers are like the ones in Saint Petersburg and Rome.

A currency exchange.

Yes to the Russian Navy!

An unexpectedly elegant lamppost base decoration.

An unexpectedly hideous city trash can.

Different brands are competing to see who can ruin the historical facade the most.

Aeroflot, Trust Bank, Kaliningrad Business Center

A German heirloom.

The Prussian houses are still holding up, although their personality is slowly eroding.

Some of the city’s historical legacy has survived even in the tiny details. For instance, this fantastic barrier consisting of a low railing and a hedge was obviously not conceived in the USSR.

The bus stop, meanwhile, is just as undoubtedly modern.

You can’t take water with you when you board your flight. So everyone leaves their half-finished bottles on the stairs before the X-ray scanner.
