LuxembourgMapOctober 23, 2006 The train ride from Brussels takes three hours. Although Luxembourg is nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany, its rail infrastructure resembles Belgium’s most of all. Here are some tracks at the central station: ![]() Trendy microphones have been installed in the station, but people don’t notice them, hence the need for hints: ![]() Close by there’s a positively bizarre haut-relief honouring all of the Luxembourgers who died in World War II. A soldier stands there with his foot under his brother in arms, who is clutching onto the Ministry of Railways logo. ![]() Then again, some of signs you see here are also very strange. What is the meaning of the emaciated sumo wrestler in a side cap holding a mine detector? Aren’t the children enough? ![]() Luxembourg reminds me of those wretched villages around Sheremetyevo airport, the ones that have to put up with air traffic over their heads all day long. ![]() The spires resemble anti-aircraft sights. ![]() Peaceable bums walk the streets. ![]() Tourists synchronizing their own impressions with the pictures in their tour guide. ![]() In Vienna you have to buy your dog poop bags. Here they’re free — just in case your dog or a lion urgently need to do a number two on the lawn. ![]() After all, lions come in all shapes and sizes — for instance, here’s one with a football. ![]() They continue to build and rebuild the city. Sometimes the hoarding passes right under some sculpture’s nose. ![]() All in all, this place is beautiful. Specifically the buildings right in the middle of the mountains, they’re the most beautiful of all. ![]() Oops, sorry, I meant this. ![]() Or rather, this. Yes, that’s better. ![]() |
