Odessa againMapSeptember 911, 2005 This was my second trip to the city, hence I felt compelled to make a thorough tour. First, the food joints. ![]() The Godfather Bar ![]() Soup kitchen ![]() I love you (written in Ukrainian) Next — monuments. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After that — the decor on the walls. You no longer see the names of the residents on display in our capitals — they’re classified, as are their telephone numbers. Whereas here there’s a full list. ![]() There are also family names on the letterboxes in every stairwell. ![]() An extraordinary find down a backstreet: pre-revolutionary bicycle store ad. ![]() Entrance (the hard sign on the end of the word dates this back to before the 1917 spelling reform) A rare instance of appropriate use of ellipsis. ![]()
Teetotallers’ Ordinary life at last. ![]() Nowhere else will you find courtyards like these in our day and age. ![]() I discovered a fantastic well-type stairwell inside one of the houses. The residents promptly pointed out that this well makes a cameo appearance in “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed”, a classic Soviet miniseries from the 1970s. ![]() One floor up an Odessite in tracksuit pants appeared and then immediately yelled into his own doorway: “Masya! Come quick, they’re filming!” Of course we’re filming, how could we not. ![]() ![]()
Keep this place clean ![]()
