In Turkey it’s common for petrol stations to hang up ribbons with flags in their brand colours. Does this make the petrol pumps more cheerful? Or more noticeable?

Один из древнейших городов мира.
One of the most ancient cities in the world.
Беспорядочный и уютный.
Disorderly and cosy.
Практически весь одноэтажный.
Almost all of the buildings are single-storey.
Архаичный уклад жизни тут дошел до наших дней. Все люди сидят на земле перед входами в свои дома.
The archaic way of life has survived right up to the present day. Everyone still sits on the ground outside the entrance to their lodgings.
Так ведь приятнее.
After all, it’s nicer that way.
Но современная турецкая цивилизация неумолимо наступает на старину.
Modern Turkish civilisation is inexorably trampling over the distant past.
Старые дома безжалостно разрушают.
Old houses are being mercilessly destroyed.
На обломках вырастает новый город.
A new city is burgeoning atop the rubble.
С прямыми просторными улицами.
With broad, straight streets.
С бездушными китайскими домами.
With soulless Chinese houses.
С современными стадионами.
With modern stadiums.
И максимально унылыми площадями, которые так радуют сердца чиновников на макетах и которые так искренне отталкивают людей.
And squares as dreary as they come. Models of the squares delight public officials and utterly repel the public.
Город исчезает и перерождается на глазах. Такие процессы шли весь XX век, сейчас это уже редкое явление.
The city is disappearing and being reborn by the minute. This process occurred throughout the XX century, but these days it’s a rare sight.

В горах долгое время лежали довольно бодрые развалины античного города Сагалассоса.
The ruins of the ancient city of Sagalassos, fairly intact, lay undisturbed in the mountains for a long time.
В древности город разрушили землетрясения и турки. Но так как город был достаточно высоко в горах, камни не разворовали.
In antiquity earthquakes and Turks laid waste to the city. However, it was located sufficiently high up in the mountains for the stones not to get stolen.
С 1985 года бельгийцы взялись за восстановление города. Складывают камни в логические кучки.
The Belgians began restoring the city in 1985. They’re stacking the stones in logical mounds.
Обнаруживают прежние формы.
Discovering shapes of yore.
Заново возводят арки.
Erecting arcs anew.
Что-то начинает прорисовываться.
The contours are starting to emerge.
Римскую баньку откопали.
They’ve dug up a Roman bath.
Главную площадь восстановили.
Restored the main square.
И даже снова запустили фонтан в некогда роскошном нимфеуме, который сегодня выглядит немного как труп после автокатастрофы, который подготовили к похоронам.
They’ve even got the fountain in the once-opulent nymphaeum up and splashing again. Today the nymphaeum looks like a car crash corpse prepped for a funeral.
Через пару лет будет конфетка.
In a few years’ time it will be a knockout.
А пока можно насладиться современной турецкой уличной скульптурой недалеко от античных развалин.
In the meantime, you can enjoy contemporary Turkish street sculpture not far from the ancient ruins.

Городской трамвай, который едет по правой части дороги, гарантируя, что там никто не будет припаркован.
The city tram runs along the right side of the road, thereby guaranteeing that no one will park there.
Через пешеходный центр трамвай тоже идет, для этого предусмотрен специальный шлагбаум, чтобы машины туда не совались.
The tram also runs through the pedestrian centre. For that reason they’ve put in a special rising arm barrier preventing cars from venturing there.

The city centre is essentially a giant roofed bazaar.

In parts the roof breaks off to make room for yet another antiquity.

А потом снова базар.
Then the bazaar picks up again.

Туркам удалось ловко сформулировать заявку на получение для Бурсы статуса объекта Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Сделано это под соусом того, что Бурса — колыбель Оттоманской цивилизации. Типа, из этой деревни выросла вся великая Турция. Колыбель выглядит примерно так:
The Turks managed to phrase their application for Bursa’s Unesco World Heritage site status rather deftly. The spin they put on it was that Bursa is the cradle of Ottoman civilisation. Turkey, in all its grandeur, originated from this village, or so the story goes. The cradle looks something like this:

Сначала может показаться, что тут совсем ничего нет интересного.
At first blush, you might think that there’s absolutely nothing of interest here.
Но замечаешь один трактор.
But then you notice the tractor.
Затем второй.
And then another one.
А потом понимаешь, что тракторы тут буквально везде, и это наблюдение хоть немного скрашивает пребывание.
Then it dawns on you that there are tractors literally everywhere, and this thought makes your sojourn here a tad more enjoyable.
