Kiev

May 13–14, 2009

Ukraine is gradually adopting various things from the West. For example, immigration officers now sit wearing gauze muzzles like total idiots. But since no normal person can stay like that for very long, they all let their masks down below the nose to cover only the mouth, thus defeating the masks’ entire purpose.

There are more and more cars in the city.

Accordingly, efforts are being stepped up to streamline parking. Signs showing the way to the nearest parking facility have been set up everywhere.

“No-parking zone” signs have been introduced.

From the new and cool category: digital signs and displays.

In the past, seeing a sign like “only right turns after 7:05” was possible only in Europe. What does that even mean, after 7:05? Who’s counting those five minutes? But apparently it’s possible.

On the other hand, there are plenty of Soviet relics still around as well. A crosswalk button.

A rather odd handicapped person.

Kiev has a large number of completely untouched places. Here’s one smack in the middle of downtown:

Another Orange Revolution was taking place in Maidan Nezalezhnosti square. Gas workers of some kind were striking.
